The 1990 Suwaseriya Ambulance Service was officially launched in the Eastern Province on June 23, 2019, marking the successful expansion of this life-saving service to all nine provinces of Sri Lanka.
The ceremonial event was held at the Ampara Urban Council Hall, attended by Dr. Harsha de Silva, Non-Cabinet Minister of Economic Reforms and Public Distribution, and Taranjit Singh Sandhu, the Indian High Commissioner to Sri Lanka.
The introduction of the service in Ampara came following a special request by Minister Daya Gamage, ensuring improved access to emergency medical care for the Eastern community. Anoma Gamage also graced the occasion, reflecting their continued commitment to the region’s progress.
During his address, Dr. Harsha de Silva expressed that this was one of the happiest days in his political career, as they were handing over something meaningful to the nation. The Indian High Commissioner reaffirmed India’s lasting support to Sri Lanka, emphasizing that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit after the April 21 attacks symbolized India’s solidarity with Sri Lanka during challenging times.
The 1990 Ambulance Service, donated by the Government of India, began with 88 ambulances and later expanded with 209 more, strengthening Sri Lanka’s emergency response system across the island.
