The First Randoli Perahera – A Night of Faith, Tradition and Majesty

Kandy once again became a spectacular stage of Sri Lanka's living cultural heritage as the First Randoli Perahera of the 2026 Kandy Esala Perahera made its majestic journey through the historic streets of the city. Under the glow of thousands of lights, the majestic tusker Wasana carried the sacred Karanduwa, representing the Sacred Tooth Relic of Lord Buddha, in one of the most revered moments of the procession associated with the Sri Dalada Maligawa. Behind the majestic tusker came a magnificent display of Sri Lankan tradition—Kandyan dancers moving to the powerful rhythms of traditional drums, colourful ceremonial costumes, fire performers, whip crackers and beautifully decorated elephants. Every movement, every beat and every light added another chapter to a tradition passed down through generations. The First Randoli Perahera is not simply a grand procession. It is a living expression of faith, history, art and Sri Lankan identity. For the people of Kandy and thousands who gather from across Sri Lanka and around the world, it is a deeply meaningful celebration of devotion and heritage. As the procession moved through the streets, the atmosphere of Kandy became unforgettable—a combination of sacred tradition, spectacular pageantry and the timeless spirit of the hill capital. One night. One procession. Centuries of tradition.
