Dithwa Cyclone Aftermath
Gampola, Sri Lanka
Following the severe flooding caused by Cyclone Dithwa, large areas of Gampola were submerged as the Mahaweli River overflowed its banks. The floodwaters caused extensive damage to homes, shops, supermarkets, and small businesses across the area.
These images show vast stocks of rice and essential food items, including dhal and other dry goods, completely soaked and contaminated by floodwater. As the supplies became unsafe for human consumption, traders were forced to dispose of tons of damaged stock, resulting in heavy financial losses.
The disaster has deeply affected livelihoods, particularly small-scale traders who depend on daily sales. Recovery efforts continue as communities struggle to rebuild after the devastation left by the floods.
